To measure the proper distance: place both feet next to the block and bend you leg, then move your feet to where your butt was, keep legs bending and move your butt close to your heels and lie on your back.
Finishing with Chatushpadasana, press outer feet down to the floor to bring your hips higher, and then press your inner feet down to make the legs parallel each other.
